Carlsberg Grant Awarded to Assistant Professor Rebecca Miller

Assistant Professor Rebecca Miller at the Copenhagen Center for Glycomics has been awarded the Carlsberg Research Infrastructure grant for DKK 1,216,960 for the period of 1 February 2021 - 31 January 2024.

Mass Photometry to dissect single molecule dynamics of functional glycosaminoglycan: protein oligomeric complexes

Project Summary:
Heparin is a drug used worldwide as an anticoagulant. Heparin can have a life-threatening side effect of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, which is caused when heparin forms large complexes with other proteins in the body. Mass Photometry is a technique that is able to perform single molecule imaging in real time; therefore, it is possible to determine the size of heparin: protein complexes. Mass Photometry enables us to view any protein complex with detailed insights into molecule by molecule self-assembly. At the Copenhagen Center for Glycomics (CCG) we are making strides to produce a cell-based heparin without the heparin induced thrombocytopenia side effects. Mass Photometry funded by the Carlsberg Research Infrastructure grant and CCG resources will enable us to validate and confirm that cell-based heparin does not have the ability to form this life-threatening side effect.
